Does your family have a tradition that has somehow turned into more of a holiday than the holiday itself? That's what Turkey Smoke has turned into for the Smith family.
This particular tradition started sometime after the tuna-cabbage roll incident, but before my dad transformed into the super chef he is today. Little by little the idea of smoking a turkey all night long on Thanksgiving Eve in preparation for Thanksgiving Day festivities caught on . . . first in our family, with my siblings and I thrilled for an excuse to stay up all night long, then to the extended family, with my dad's brothers joining in for the excitement. Shortly after, my mom's sisters decided they wanted to party, too! Today, Turkey Smoke reaches beyond family to our friends . . . and even our friends' families! We all gather at the Smith house for some good eats, horseshoes, games, and of course, drinks. You can think of it as a sort of precursor to Thanksgiving, or tailgating the holiday, with just as much food -- but a whole lot more fun :-)
